Product performance ranks #1 or #2 for a vast majority of buyers, but performance alone does not win primary status. Supply chain excellence and global scale infrastructure, proven product performance and quality assurance, and comprehensive portfolio integration enabling workflow compatibility are the top reasons cited for primary supplier selection. Roughly half of buyers highlight comprehensive product ecosystems that simplify complex workflows as the key strength of their incumbent.
Switching is hard and costly: a vast majority rate it very or somewhat difficult and a majority never replace general reagents with plant-specific reagents at any workflow stage.
The top barriers to switching are extensive validation and re-testing requirements, workflow integration and technical infrastructure disruption, and data continuity concerns. When a switch does happen, it is most likely during early research and discovery. The triggers that overcome the barrier are performance issues with current reagents, supply challenges, and inconsistent batch-to-batch variability rather than pricing.
